Content Warnings: Wild Fires, Parental Death
From award-winning and bestselling author Jewell Parker Rhodes comes a powerful coming-of-age survival tale exploring issues of race, class, and climate changeAddy is haunted by the tragic fire that killed her parents, leaving her to be raised by her grandmother. Now, years later, Addy’s grandmother has enrolled her in a summer wilderness program. There, Addy joins five other Black city kids—each with their own troubles—to spend a summer out west. Deep in the forest the kids learn new (and to them) strange skills: camping, hiking, rock climbing, and how to start and safely put out campfires. Most important, they learn to depend upon each other for companionship and survival. But then comes a devastating forest fire…Addy is face-to-face with her destiny and haunting past. Developing her courage and resiliency against the raging fire, it’s up to Addy to lead her friends to safety. Not all are saved. But remembering her origins and grandmother’s teachings, she’s able to use street smarts, wilderness skills, and her spiritual intuition to survive.
Addy’s brain is always finding the end of the maze. She is always ready to find the exit of a place, just in case. When she arrives in the middle of nowhere for the summer in a wilderness program she meets Leo who is willing to teach her loads about mapping. When she was a kid, Addy saw her parents die in a fire and so fire is her biggest nemesis. When her friends and herself get caught in the middle of nowhere in a fire her brain is working out all the ways to leave safely. And there goes her biggest mission: saving her friends and herself, thanks to all her knowledge while facing her fear.
It was beautiful. I was so into the story that I was gutted that my copy did not have the maps (they will be included in the final copy!). Addy, Jay and Leo were definitely my favourite characters and I just wanted them to be safe (alongside the others obviously). There was so much to learn from this book and the whole plot was amazing! Also the plots twists, yes! Honestly go for it, it’s a middle grade novel but anyone can read it! I don’t even know what else to say because I don’t want to give any spoilers away… so go read it.
